MARY GRIFFIN
CHEK News reporter
Griffin, who grew up in Vancouver, took to her CCM bike at age five like a fish to water, later commuting to university and then journalism school. Today she finds as much joy whipping around Greater Victoria streets as she did then, as evidenced by her participation in charity rides and 6 a.m. spins with her Tripleshot Cycling group where she is both a member and a coach: “I love coaching women who are just getting into the sport.” Griffin has been reporting for CHEK News since 2003 (having first worked in Dawson Creek and Yorkton, Sask. before record-breaking winters drove her back to the coast to thaw out) and on various CBC shows for about a decade. Griffin and her husband, a fellow broadcaster, have two university-age sons, Declan and Seamus. She knows all too well of the devastating impact of cancer on families. Her brother-in-law Mark Osborne died of pancreatic cancer in March 2020. Family called him “the mountain man” due to his love of the outdoors, preferably the North Shore mountains near the Vancouver home he shared with Griffin’s sister Michelle and their two children. “Every single time he came to Victoria, he brought his bike, including his last visit not long before he died,” said Griffin. “If Mark was still alive, I know he’d love to hear about the End2End Ride, and the children it’s going to help.
